Singing software hit the market in the mid 1980s with high price tags only affordable by top recording studios, or research labs. Initially voice software for singing was used in post production to fix problems that occurred in the recording session. Later, singing software expanded in function to provide automated pitch correction, eq, and other effects in real time, which was very helpful during live performances. The problems with this software were that if the singer hit a note that was far off pitch, the software would not know the correct note to and so while the pitch might be within the scale, it could be the wrong scale degree.

Voice software for singing has evolved in recent years to the point of providing vocalists training modules that help them sing on pitch. With high approval by voice teachers, a student works in their lesson to understand the software and what areas of their voice should be targeted for improvement. The student then uses the software at home as part if their regular daily singing practices. PitchPerfector™ has been one of the strongest products in this market and offers both student and teacher versions of singing software for under one hundred dollars.
