Singing software has been around for years in a variety of options and packaging. The first type of singing software is to simply record a singer, then to add special effects. These affects can also be applied to non vocal recordings. The most common effect is reverb, which attempts to model or mimic the natural reverberation of a live concert hall or other environment. Typically, musicians record in a studio with lots of sound isolation with expensive efforts to eliminate all room noise. Once a clean signal is captured, other instruments are mixed, with clean signals, to create a pleasing balance. At various levels of mixing, reverb is added to make the clean audio image sound more natural.

Every vocalist wants to sing on pitch, but most experience significant challenges. Some vocalists are lucky enough to be able to hear their own voice clearly and adjust their vocal pitch at will. Most people can not hear their voice accurately, and their ability to hear their voice correctly shifts from day to day, dependent on diet, allergies, and common colds. Singing software can help a vocalist by showing them their real pitch so that they can refine their pitch on a daily basis to accommodate for environmental changes.
