What Is Dahl?
A Dahl (also spelled dal or dhal) is a staple of Indian cooking. It refers to a simple dish made from split lentils or peas or a combination of the two along with some Indian spices. My personal favorite is a split pea dahl. It is usually served on a bed of rice alongside a main dish such as a curry. Dahl is cooked daily in most Indian families and is eaten throughout the day with each meal. Dahl is cheap, healthy and full of protein and fiber, making it a great food too keep around and of course eat.
Like many bean and legume recipes, a dahl can be turned into a soup by adding more liquid, or it can be eaten as a tick mash. It is more of a method than a recipe since the basic dish can easily be modified by adding various spices and seasonings including herbs, chili spices and various oils or ghee. Dahl can also be served with chapatis, an Indian flat bread made from whole wheat flour.
